ABSTRACT

Actors cannot play an emotional or psychological state of being without resorting to indicating , which, once again, means showing the audience what the actor thinks the character should be thinking or feeling in an inauthentic fashion. The audience always knows when an actor is full of shit, even if they can’t articulate why the feel that way. Truthful behavior that fulfills the needs of the story is, in theory, the endgame of any acting technique, although some are absolutely more effective than others. Actions should use as few words as possible to get the point across. An action should never be based on the actor having to feel anything in particular, nor should it be predicated on the other person in the scene having to be in a specific state of emotion. An errand is an action that requires no response from the other person in the scene.
