ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the issue of the securitization of threats, a phenomenon that explains why some threats are given priority over others, and how this securitization issue may influence the perception of menace in the organization, from the chief executive officer down to the employee. It is important that the security professional in charge, be aware of the political manipulations underpinning this securitization process in order to keep cool and not to be influenced by a political process that may distract the security professional from the real danger. To stay in line with the securitization theory, it is clear that the terrorist threat has reached securitization status and this is endorsed by all security departments for a single reason. It is almost the only way to secure funds to improve the security posture of a facility. The chapter considers four major actors: policymakers, bureaucratic actors, technical actors and the public.
