ABSTRACT

The environmental effects of mining operations also pose a threat to local and regional communities, which is the source of many conflicts, preventing or hindering the operations of mining enterprises. Therefore, Chapter 11 describes local and regional communities as key stakeholders in the extraction industry and key players in sustainable development policy. As in the case of ecological organisations, social problems are presented from a dynamic perspective in the life cycle perspective of coal mining enterprises. In this context, the first subsection describes the types of disputes and conflicts that may arise in connection with the establishment, expansion and decommissioning of mining plants. The second subsection presents case studies in the field of negotiating and resolving social disputes, as well as the final effects of the actions undertaken by these communities. The third subsection contains a summary containing tips and recommendations for the successful negotiation of mining enterprises and local communities and the co-creation of sustainable development policy.
