ABSTRACT

The main objective of the book is to present the role and impact of individual stakeholder groups on the Sustainable Development of mining enterprises and extraction industries. Therefore, the purpose of the first subsection of chapter 1 is to introduce the reader to the main subject of the study, which includes a combination of three research aspects. The first relates to the essence of sustainable development, its origins, including Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The second covers the stakeholder theory, and the third allows the embedding of the first two aspects in a specific industry environment. With the above threads in mind, the first section presents the genesis of the concept of sustainable development and the principles of its implementation in an enterprise using the idea of corporate social responsibility. The desired effects of implementing this concept are also indicated from the point of view of an enterprise and its further and closer environment, primarily based on in-depth literature studies on the subject. The second subsection presents the main problems of implementing sustainable development in mining enterprises, related to the specifics of their operations, primarily including above average environmental and social hardships, while attempting to answer the question whether the effective implementation of sustainable development principles in extraction industries is possible at all. The above mentioned considerations, constituting the second subsection, are a result of a review of international case studies. The third subsection covers the principles of reporting on sustainable development in mining enterprises, developed as part of the Global Reporting Initiative, and a review of good international practices in this area, as well as typical errors and misunderstandings related to the method and purpose of reporting on CSR.
