ABSTRACT

The third chapter opens the second part of the monograph, which refers to individual groups of internal stakeholders, i.e. owners, managers, employees and trade unions. This chapter is devoted to the role of the first of the mentioned groups in the shaping of sustainable development of mining enterprises. Bearing in mind what has been argued int he previous two chapters, it is assumed that the ownership form significantly determines the objectives and behaviour of mining enterprises, and thus significantly influences the direction and effects of sustainable development policy. Therefore, in the first subsection, statistics on mining operations in Europe and CIS are presented, including the indicated ownership forms. In this and further parts of the monograph the authors primarily focus on the extraction of energy resources, i.e. coal, oil and natural gas. The second subsection contains case studies on the impact of forms of ownership on sustainable development policies. The third subsection is a theoretical summary of the observed regularities, including the identification of the strengths and weaknesses of different forms of ownership in shaping sustainable development policy. This subsection ends with recommendations aimed at improving the implementation of the SD addressed to private and state owners of mining enterprises.
