ABSTRACT

Chapter five is dedicated to employees of mining enterprises. It opens with statistics on employment in the mining industry in the analysed extraction regions. The first section draws attention to the problems of efficiency, safety and accident rates in coal mining enterprises in examined regions. These issues are additional challenges for sustainable development, less common in other industries. In the second section, the attitudes and requirements of employees of coal mining enterprises are analysed. The degree to which their needs are met in the context of implementing sustainable development is also assessed. The above analysis is based on results of own surveys and a review of the case studies, literature studies and analysis of CSR reports in the mining industry. The third subsection defines the patterns of employee participation in shaping sustainable development policy in the context of the level of competitive and economic development of mining regions.
