ABSTRACT

Classroom management includes three primary components: relationships, expectations, and consistency. Relationships are the foundation of everything in the classroom, yet relationships alone are not enough. Expectations are based on appropriate and engaging lessons from the teacher and high and clear communication about what is expected from the students. Consistency means that we have engaging lessons and follow through on expecting and enforcing appropriate behavior from students on a daily basis. In this chapter, the author describes an activity in which participants are asked to rank the three components of classroom management in terms of which is their greatest strength and weakness. Have participants review what the author says about the first day of school. Then have volunteers role play teaching on the first day of school with the goal being to not only build positive relationships with students, but also intentionally teaching content on this important school day.
