ABSTRACT

Academic writers use citations extensively. When writers cite sources, they are doing at least two things: creating authority for a claim they are reporting and showing some of the ongoing conversation about the topic they are discussing. Some beginning writers make the unfortunate mistake of thinking originality is what matters in academic writing, that they will receive more credit for presenting ideas as their own creation than they will for writing about someone else's ideas. Paraphrasing is when we restate the idea or information from a source in our own words. Generational differences in attitudes and behaviors in the workplace affect how to manage workers effectively. Sociological, psychological, and demographic influences may be responsible for those differences, but generalizing about people is dangerous.
