ABSTRACT

This concluding chapter provides a theoretical analysis on middle powers and South Korea’s middle power diplomacy. Based on the literature review, this chapter suggests that there are three types of middle powers: functional, behavioral, and ideational. It is argued that ideational facet is the prevailing feature of South Korea’s middle power diplomacy. In positioning Korea’s middle power and Middle East policy, structural realism, the rise of China, and the declining U.S. hegemony are taken into account. The chapter also covers the factors underlying South Korea’s resource diplomacy strategies and typologies and concludes by identifying areas of improvement and policy recommendations.
