ABSTRACT

We outline the purpose for this book, as well as its inception after years of learning and teaching these methodologies. We discuss the psychological anthropological roots of our approach to culture as socially learned knowledge, which allows for mutually intelligible interactions between community members. Though we draw from a rich body of existing theory and method within anthropology and related fields, we argue that what was missing from the field was a compact guide explaining complex topics in straightforward and practical terms, via research examples, textual and visual software guides, and hands-on exercises, all of which this book provides. In introducing readers to these substantive issues, we also provide them with glimpses into our personal backgrounds as well, setting the stage for both the book as a whole and for further subsequent discussions of our own research and commitments.
