“Before the world falls into disorder”

Chapter Five reflects on the centenary in light of the political and social movements that increasingly gripped both Britain and France over the course of the centenary. It recounts national commemorations of the Armistice centenary through this lens. Then the chapter returns to the theoretical framework with which the book began, and considers the implications of the eleven local sites of memory for theories of national memory—and the nation—at large.
