ABSTRACT
This chapter distinguishes between witnesses who are permitted to testify from those who are not qualified as witnesses and offers rationales that support the distinctions. The elements of a competent witness are reviewed, and how judges and attorneys control the testimony of witnesses receives appropriate treatment. The text presents the mechanics of witness interrogation, including direct and cross-examination, redirect and recross-examination, and impeachment and rehabilitation of witnesses through the use of traditional techniques.
