ABSTRACT

In this chapter we explore the features and value of support during labour, with reference to the experiences of women, and those who provide support, including: midwives, doulas and the woman’s chosen labour supporters or birth companions. We summarise the research evidence that demonstrates the immense value of labour support and consider the implications of this evidence for how maternity care is provided worldwide, noting the importance of providing culturally safe support and respecting diversity. We make the critical point that, whatever situation you are working in, providing support is always important and the way that you interact with a woman in labour can make a critical difference to her experience.
