ABSTRACT

In this chapter we explore how we can better understand women’s experiences of feeling anxious and fearful about labour and birth, and thus how we can best offer support to individual women. We note that in high-income countries, women report being increasingly anxious about labour and birth, which may have significant long-term consequences for themselves, their babies and their families. Drawing on the research evidence, we discuss how best to recognise and respond to women’s fears, as well as the fears of their partners. We discuss a range of strategies which may reduce women’s fears and build women’s confidence, including the value of continuity of care. We note that offering relational support in a way that builds trust and reduces fear may be the most effective strategy.
