Introduction

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book discusses how our understanding of the ancient past and our relationships to it has changed during the most recent era of globalization. It investigates how classics and related disciplines have responded to the development of globalization studies, global studies, and related fields. The book outlines and models a direction in classical studies that seeks perspectives on global issues through multicentric, comparative, and interdisciplinary approaches to ancient culture and history. It presents a theoretical framework for transhistoricism, mapping and modeling transhistorical thinking as conceptually analogous to transborder/global thinking.
