ABSTRACT
This chapter discusses that the growing body of scholarship constitutes the beginning of a global turn in classics, and it is precisely the complexity of this field-wide project. It undertakes a comparative epistemology of global studies and classics, with particular focus on those parts of the field working to globalize the discipline. The study of global issues transcends disciplinary boundaries and traditional arrangements of academic knowledge, in the same way that the issues themselves transcend time and place. Global studies has developed over the last decade as a deliberately trans-disciplinary project, which views with skepticism the fracturing and fragmentation of human lived experience into narrowly conceived areas of specialized knowledge. The work of global classics in challenging the bounded geographies of antiquity and the dichotomy of ancient and modern may open the field to new emphases and perspectives, but it does not fundamentally change our desire to learn from and about the past.
