ABSTRACT
The globalization of classics is already underway, but it is an unfinished project, barely begun in fact. Many intellectual temptations and pitfalls obstruct the panoramas of transhistorical interconnectivities and cultural flows that are the object of the global study of antiquities. Interdisciplinary, multilevel, and transhistorical thinking is challenging and unfamiliar, especially in a discipline whose borders have been so heavily patrolled as those of classics. Global approaches to classics are prone to many of the same problems of scope, reductionism, aggregation, and generalization as global studies and other comparative methodologies. The transdisciplinary methodology of global classics, synthesizing literary and historiographical interpretation with the study of material cultures, offers a model for holistic approaches to the complex issues of transhistorical human interconnectedness.
