ABSTRACT
With the development of concert culture in seventeenth-century Europe, an interest in resurrecting past works saw masses or movements from masses begin to be performed in secular venues. Meanwhile, church services were becoming concertised, incorporating ever expanding musical offerings. Through an exploration of concertised masses in several European locations, including Bologna, Salzburg, and the Catholic Court of Dresden, many of the reasons why the concert mass became established are laid out.
