ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the areas of research that are most specific to practicing commercial photography. The Internet is a vibrant and vital research source and really there is no limit to where one might look for inspiration and ideas. Snapchat is useful for documenting the actual shoot and sharing the behind-the-scenes news and information, and it is also useful for storytelling. The studio is used to photograph objects and produce marketing material for the museum. Cameras are also used to ‘scan’ posters, books, slides and negatives; they also make 3D object scans using the process of photogrammetry. Photographers are intended to sell products and lifestyles: a successful shoot will show these in such a way that they are understood and made desirable. Both advertising and fashion photography are clearly constructed, but they can veer from creating images in a documentary style through to images that are overtly fabricated, constructed either in a studio or on location.
