ABSTRACT

Research affects all aspects of practice, history and theory – as well as more generally the understanding of the wider context of photographic practice. Research needs to reach an audience, as methods of communication and dissemination of ideas play an important role in conveying new knowledge and debate. Exhibitions can play a key role in the interpretation and dissemination of work, but audiences are sometimes limited to the small community of the gallery-going public. Recently, the rapid expansion of web-based exhibitions and blogging have added a new dimension to the understanding of photography and, most significantly, to the wider dissemination of ideas and knowledge. The photographer’s archive, appropriately stored, provides a lifelong source of references and potential material for interpretation, evaluation and understanding. The Photography and the Archive Research Centre based at University of the Arts, London, has been steadily collecting posters and invitations from photography exhibitions.
