ABSTRACT

Photography has an extraordinary history and numerous theories have been applied to its history and practice as part of an analytical research process contributing to the understanding of the medium. Most academic enquiry into photography, to date, is based on the history of North American and European photographic practice, and photographic education is developing quickly in other parts of the world. Research is always limited by current knowledge and the most exciting investigations bring new knowledge into the field; innovation in research instigates inspiration for future photographers and artists. Knowledge gained in the field of art can be transferred to any other type of photographic practice: commercial photographers, journalists and artists alike all look to a wide range of references for the creation of their work and employ strategies for creating images that are discovered through a practical and theoretical research process.
