ABSTRACT
Meifred was the chief proponent of the valved horn in Paris. Following his study and publication of articles and a brief method on the valved instrument, he was hired as the Conservatoire’s first valved horn teacher in 1833. He published a comprehensive method for the instrument in 1840 that provides useful perspectives on how to use the instrument to its best effects. These perspectives kept him in good stead with the Conservatoire administration and his initial teaching colleague, Dauprat. This chapter provides a more complete biography of Meifred’s life and work, and describes his teaching method of 1840, and its performance ramifications. It will also summarize the work of Gallay, Dauprat’s successor as teacher of the natural horn at the Conservatoire in 1842.
