ABSTRACT

Perception of astrologers is intrinsic in understanding how astrology is practised in India and worldwide. In pre-modern India, astrology was a sophisticated intellectual endeavour only accessible to Brahmins, the caste of priest and the educated; however, there are visible changes in contemporary times. Astrologers with advanced skills may be able to earn significantly as compared to the other non-skilled members of the society; the presence of the latter is in abundance, unlike the former. Astrologers rely not only on the earnings through consultation but also through the performance of extensive rituals. They claim to frequently counsel corporate and political patrons on a regular basis, tendering psychotherapeutic advice, asset management and business alliance guidance. They also assist in the determination of a propitious date and time to file nomination for election. Elites and the middle-class act as gatekeepers to the access of reputed and well-regarded astrologers and vice versa. The case studies of astrologers are discussed under suitable thematic categories for better comprehension.
