ABSTRACT

The following chapter entails case studies of the casual and fervent believers along with non-believers to provide an understanding of prevailing meanings of astrology. The cases are explored under sociological themes engaging with concepts of consumption, aspirations, gender, culture and others. Chapter necessitates borrowings from Bourdieu's concept of Habitus, the space between practice and the social structure negotiated with actor's intent and the independent structure. Changing lifestyles of the middle class, which includes increasing participation in “leisure and entertainment” is part of the “broader processes of the socio-economic restructuring”, and the rise in aspiration for affluence is its expression. The chapter is divided under the variables of Gender, Occupation, and Age, which are significant factors transecting within a household.
