ABSTRACT

Previous research has identified that inadequate responses to the challenging behaviour of care-experienced children are a key contributor to their criminalisation. Based on the data from our study, this chapter explores the role of the residential care environment in the criminalisation of children. We examine the process of the contracting out of care and problems relating to the training, resourcing and experience of carers. We also look at the care environment itself and, in particular, whether it is culturally safe for Indigenous children. Finally, we explore the police–care relationship from the perspective of care providers.
