ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the results of a gender analysis of our data. Research has identified differing experiences of care and criminalisation for girls and women compared to boys and men. Of particular interest is the legacy of institutional abuse evidenced in the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse, such as the abuses that occurred at the Parramatta Girls Home and Cootamundra Aboriginal Girls Home. We unpack this gendered understanding of the care experience and apply this to our data using an intersectional approach that centres Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children.
