ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book offers an outline of the vision and practice of integral development. It explores the issues of art, spirituality and social transformations in transforming existing discourses and practices of development. The book also explores alternative discourses and practices of democracy and development which contribute to realization of integral development. It builds upon themes, practices and experiments in Gandhi such as Swaraj and Satyagraha for rethinking and reconstituting development and realizing integral development. The book describes the vision and practice of the self-study mobilization of Swadhyaya—a socio-spiritual movement and initiative in development in contemporary India. It discusses the issues of development and cross-cultural understanding. The book also discusses the discourse and practice of inclusive development by exploring the challenge of poverty. It examines the transformation of the discourse of the Kingdom of God to Gardens of God.
