ABSTRACT
Dominant models and practices of development have caused illness in self, society and polity. This chapter explores alternative discourses and practices of democracy and development which contribute to realization of integral development. Democracy and development are multi-dimensional realities and possibilities and, at present, both of these have been imprisoned within their dominant manifestations. Democracy today mainly has been reduced to electoral democracy and as a mechanism of electoral democracy, it has been imprisoned within the logic of money and power in which it is difficult for ordinary citizens to take part. Democracy has become its own worst enemy as many of us rarely interrogate its foundational limitations such as limits of the very logic of representation itself. This chapter strives to reconstitute democracy and development as fields of ethics, aesthetics and responsibility.
