ABSTRACT

Reconstituting discourses and practices can build upon many contemporary visions and experiments. Swadhyaya is a movement in Western India working in Gujarat and also in a global diaspora. Swadhyaya means study of self and Swadhyaya movement creates opportunities for undertaking laboring work together by building common orchards and ponds in villages together. It employs the idea of shramabhakti—devotional labor—to undertake development activities. Sarvodoya is a vision and practice of development of all which was cultivated by Gandhi and Vinoba in India and later practiced in movements such as the Sarvodaya Shramadana movement in Sri Lanka. This movement builds upon both Gandhian and Buddhist traditions and is engaged in contemporary efforts in reconciliation and dialogues in Sri Lanka. This chapter describes their visions and their socio-spiritual initiatives in development.
