ABSTRACT

This chapter reports on a teaching project on preparing veterinary medical students’ needs in clinical communication. Veterinary medical students are expected to perform highly demanding tasks during their clinical clerkship such as reading medical cases, making diagnoses, explaining treatment plans, and writing referrals and medical reports. This chapter summarises the analysis of the needs of veterinary students in terms of English oral proficiency and competencies for study at university and in their later professional lives. We also conducted interviews with stakeholders such as vets, clinicians, nurses, and other allied health professionals in the field as well as observations of educational and professional interactions. These findings showcase what level of English skills students need for effective learning in veterinary medicine.
