ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews previous relevant studies of health communication in the Chinese contexts, focusing on research into exploring how clinicians and healthcare providers view their communication with patients and whether local culture has shaped their understanding and interpretation of these medical encounters. This chapter will summarise the kind of methodologies these scholars use in a Chinese context to explore health communication, identify existing knowledge gaps, and present the landscape of the research that has emerged in the Chinese settings. This chapter also provides a synopsis of the healthcare system in Hong Kong, reviewing the territory’s healthcare policy and its impact on the kind of available healthcare services provided to its citizens such as the use of traditional Chinese medicine in primary care, and how clinicians translate Western models of communication when working in Chinese contexts with Chinese patients.
