ABSTRACT

This chapter concludes with a summary and discussion of the findings by addressing the research questions posed at the beginning of the book. The chapter first provides an overview of the study and then discusses primary findings from the study. The discussion of the key findings is divided into three parts. First, the chapter reviews the 1st- and 3rd-grade Korean bilingual students’ oral and written language use focusing on their translanguaging practices. Second, the chapter discusses the comparison of the two focal 3rd-graders’ current language use to their earlier use as 1st-graders as findings of a longitudinal study. Then, the chapter discusses the overall sociocultural influences on the students’ language use, including the parents’ attitudes and their home practices to support their children’s HL learning. The chapter ends with implications for researchers in the bilingual and biliteracy field to suggest directions for future research followed by implications for educators and parents of emergent bilingual learners to better support their dual language and literacy learning.
