ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with the first theme that was deemed a meaningful descriptor of the study participants’ perceptions of English-Medium Instruction, namely the conceptualisations of English that emerged from the students’ responses. In the discussion of this theme, the findings of the qualitative thematic investigation will be enriched by the statistical information that I obtained from the quantitative analysis of the questionnaire responses, in an effort to capture the richness that characterises the study participants’ experience. Thus, drawing on vivid examples from the data, the chapter illustrates the study participants’ stance towards issues such as standard language ideology, the international role of the English language and the repercussions that this was believed to have on their lives, academic studies and future career.
