ABSTRACT

After looking at the conceptualisations of English that the study participants shared in their answers on the questionnaire and in the interviews and the focus group, This chapter sets out to explore what the students felt they needed in order to be successful EMI learners. To do so, the chapter will first describe the abilities that, according to the respondents, both lecturers and students need to possess to make learning in an EMI environment a fruitful experience. Second, drawing on both previous research on EMI in Europe and the findings of this study, the chapter will stress how an adaptation period can help students to gradually familiarise themselves with the learning context and to develop the skills and literacies that are important to successfully cope with EMI.
