ABSTRACT
Jatkasaari is one of several locations on the Helsinki waterfront that came under development at the beginning of the twenty-first century, following the relocation of industrial harbour activities to the eastern part of the Finnish capital. Important factors in the area’s positioning within the city are its closeness to the historical city centre and its position adjacent to Ruoholahti, where there is a metro station, a large shopping centre, and the Cable Factory cultural centre, all in relatively easy walking distance for the inhabitants of the developing area. The various “simple stories” encountered in the rest of the partial local master plan can be considered as added storylines that outline the challenges of the area and the solutions that are proposed to achieve the stated ends: measures are taken, for example, to ensure smooth waste management and noise reduction and to overcome challenges posed by contaminated soil.
