ABSTRACT

This book describes a collaborative approach to problem solving, using an integrated model consisting of the steps in the problem solving process, a set of problem solving tools, and the three key behaviours of curiosity, collaboration, and evidence-based thinking. There are many other books or articles which focus on the problem solving steps alone, or the tools, or aspects of behaviour. Other books which discuss some of these together tend to be set in manufacturing industries, focused on a specific methodology, or heavy academic texts that are 350–400 pages long and very expensive to purchase. They are simply not accessible to a wide audience. I set out to make this book simple and accessible, with the goal of encouraging people to start applying this approach in their own workplace today. A theme of this book is to do what you can from where you are, regardless of whether your workplace has a formal improvement programme in place. We all start from somewhere. A limitation arising from this approach to the book is that I do not go into detail in describing some complex ideas, and almost certainly have left some good ideas and tools out.
