ABSTRACT
This chapter focuses on the importance of community engagement – both in real life and in digital communities – to the success of a journalist. Connecting with those in your community will help you cultivate sources, leads, and story ideas, as well as combat any implicit biases – thus building trust and credibility. This chapter will also explore how to engage community members in conversation with the goal of listening, hearing, and connecting, to forge connections, advance the story, and inform the public at large.
