ABSTRACT

This chapter centers on how nonverbal cues indicate the nature of the relationship that people have with one another, concentrating primarily on close relationships and the use of intimacy, affection, and positive involvement or immediacy cues (and their opposites). It also sheds light on how nonverbal cues mark a particular relational stage for “romantic” pairs (escalating, maintaining, and de-escalating) and the ways in which nonverbal cues can change the nature and stage of a relationship. The chapter reviews concepts and literature about nonverbal cues as they occur within the bounds of other relational types, including families, friendships, and work relationships.
