ABSTRACT

Resilience is based on constant creativity, innovation, and experimentation. When we neglect the nonrational wisdom we have in us, our solutions are missing critical information and may create negative impacts on the ecosystem and society. In this section, we will explore how creative processes and experimentation can result in innovation and resilience. I define human creativity as the ability to connect with our intuitive knowledge and with aesthetics, activating our imagination. Innovation is creativity in action, the ability to experiment with new ways of doing things and solving problems. Our planetary challenges require that we globally rethink and reinvent how we produce, consume, and distribute products; how we eat, dress, and entertain ourselves; and how we shelter 9.2 billion people on the planet by 2040. There is not a single profession exempt from the need to reinvent itself.

Being open to the uncertainty of experimentation and creativity, to the divergent thinking that seems inefficient, and to intuitive knowing is important as they are key aspects of the Sustainability Mindset, and this Principle guides you how to develop them.
