ABSTRACT

Brazil, China, and Thailand are well known as pharmerging countries; they prioritize the manufacturing and use of unbranded pharmaceuticals. This chapter examines pharmerging countries with a focus on their experiences with healthcare reform to provide healthcare equity. First, the characteristics of pharmerging countries are described followed by a discussion of their healthcare systems and equity experiences. Leading emerging markets are Brazil, Russia, India, China, Mexico, Indonesia, South Korea, and Turkey. Moreover, pharmerging countries such as Brazil and Russia also increased their generic market size considerably from 2010 to 2015 and have strong potential for increasing the market size of unbranded generic medicines. As one of the pharmerging countries, Brazil has a large share of the generic pharmaceutical market. Since 1988, Brazil has developed healthcare policies to achieve the objectives of Brazilian Unified Health System, which include provision of primary, secondary, and tertiary healthcare services and promotion of community participation.
