ABSTRACT

Chapter 3 continues to take a broad focus, although this time examining differences across different parts of the dataset. Since previous research has found that representations of schizophrenia are more negative in the tabloid press, the chapter begins by identifying distinctive language in the tabloids and broadsheets by identifying 100 keywords for each. The analysis corroborates the findings of previous research, clearly showing that the topic of violence and criminality is a distinctive feature of tabloid reporting relative to the broadsheets. Instead, a distinctive topic in the broadsheets was arts and culture. Because either genre was skewed by newspapers with a higher productivity, it was decided to examine 100 distinct words for each newspaper individually. This revealed that key differences may not lie across a tabloid/broadsheet axis but rather a political one.
