ABSTRACT
The difference between the processes involved in explaining a condition by identifying its causes, and understanding it as an attempt to achieve a certain outcome is discussed. An archaeological example of the former is given by the attempt to explain the formation of chambered tombs in the early Neolithic of western Europe. It is in this chapter that the concept of humanness is introduced indicating the scale of human diversity.
