ABSTRACT
Current archaeological procedures employ various ‘uniformitarian’ assumptions. These enable a secure link to be established between the surviving material residues and theircauses. These causes are linked in archaeology to a human presence. The limitations that are often assumed to exist between interpreting residues that originated from human behaviours that were ‘mechanistically’ induced, and those that have resulted from culturally specific motivations are discussed.
