ABSTRACT
By the middle of the twentieth century the attempts to describe the variations observed in the material residues by assigning these to cultural motivations, was sidelined in favour of treating the material residues as the eroded products of different systems of adaptive behaviour. It was upon this basis that a New Archaeology was established. This tended to explain material change in terms of systemic change which resulted from the changing requirements of the system to function adaptively.
