ABSTRACT

The infrastructure established in Gujarat for the treatment of industrial effluents and its effectiveness in treating pollution have been discussed in Chapters 8 and 10 based on empirical evidence. The aforementioned infrastructure is unable to treat the industrial effluents to the desired levels and the discharge of partially treated effluents have in turn degraded the quality of receiving water bodies (Chapters 7 and 9). In this chapter, we have qualitatively assessed the factors contributing to the ineffectiveness of the CETPs. This has been done based on the discussions held with the representatives of the regulator, academicians, institutes, non-government organisations (NGOs) and the CETP operators.
