ABSTRACT

This chapter critically analyses the legislative and regulatory framework along with the policy and constitutional provisions for pollution control and the overall environmental governance in the Indian context. The approaches—regulatory as well as voluntary—for pollution control have been discussed in detail. The current monitoring practices and remedies to deal with non-compliance and enforcement mechanisms have been included. The remedies available and practised to deal with non-compliance are a part of the discussion. Policy instruments practised elsewhere in the world for environmental protection and improvement of environmental compliance have been referred to in the chapter at the relevant places.
