ABSTRACT

Developing an understanding of land warfare matters because land has a crucial political significance. Modern system tactical warfare emerged during the First World War; modern system operational level warfare emerged during the Second World War. Technology has played an important role in driving forward developments in the theory and practice of land warfare. Aircraft, new means of communication, and the increasing range and rate-of-fire of artillery and small-arms have created new problems and opportunities for armies since 1900. For many states, the modern system of land warfare might be irrelevant because the primary roles for their land forces are internal. Since war is a competitive activity, it is always likely that an adversary will try and shift the terms of conflict to suit their strengths. Land warfare has since 1900 been conducted in many different ways and this is likely to continue in the future.
