ABSTRACT

Freud studied Greek myths and used them to create many of his theories. Greek mythology is in large part the saga of the conflict between men and women presented from the point of view of male fantasy. An important theme in Greek myth is that each generation tries to get what it wants without repeating the mistakes of the previous generation. Greek stories of the creation of the world mirror the psychosocial development of each human being that Freud described. Myths about heroes are stories of puberty, of giving up your infantile personality, and becoming a responsible adult. This is a fundamental psychological transformation that everyone has to undergo. Freud used myths about Oedipus and Narcissus to name complexes and pathologies. Like Freud’s theories, Greek myths are male-oriented and dualistic.
