ABSTRACT

Counters are words that classify nouns according to common attributes for numbering purposes. By using a counter, students can provide more information about the object they are counting. Korean has an extensive list of counters. Some are used only with native Korean numbers, whereas others are used only with Sino-Korean numbers. Combining the appropriate counter with the right number set is a systematic but complex process. However, with practice students will acquire proficiency. The chapter discusses some of the most frequently used counters, including those for telling time, days, months, and years. Counting days with Sino-Korean numbers is easy. Counting days with native Korean numbers is irregular and there are special words for days up to 20. Koreans use Sino-Korean numbers for counting calendar months.
