ABSTRACT
A direct quotation conveys the exact spoken or written message. Consider the following sentence:
“Jane said, ‘I will come to the party no matter what happens!’”
This sentence is a direct quotation. It reports what has been said or written verbatim, using quotation marks. On the other hand, an indirect quotation delivers only the main message. In an indirect quotation, the speaker delivers what somebody said or wrote without using the original speaker’s exact words. Consequently, an indirect quotation involves the modification of the original utterance. Consider the following example:“Jane said that she would come to the party no matter what happens.”
Notice that the personal pronoun and the tense are modified so that they represent the speaker’s voice and perspective. This unit introduces direct and indirect quotations in Korean.
